Summer is the perfect time of year to earn some money and gain experience as you are going through your education. With PEI’s biggest industries being agriculture, fishing, and tourism, the Island has lots of summer job opportunities for students who are starting out and willing to learn. Here are some helpful tips to land your summer job:
Start Looking Early
PEI student summer job postings typically begin to open in January and continue to pop up throughout the spring. Don’t wait until your school semester is finished before starting to look for your summer job!
Attend Job Fairs
Job fairs provide a valuable opportunity to meet and interact with employers in person. In PEI, job fairs usually take place in April as employers are preparing to hire for the summer season. Mark the job fair dates on your calendar ahead of time and come prepared with your resume and to talk about what makes you a good employee.
Don’t Underestimate the Value of Networking
Reach out to professors, academic advisors, business owners or other professionals you know. Local businesses also often post job openings on their websites and social media channels. Follow businesses that interest you and keep your eye open for opportunities. Engaging in volunteer opportunities in a field you are interested in is also a valuable way to contribute to your community while building relationships and making connections.
Utilize Resources
Check with your university or college’s career resource centre for information and help with resume writing and interview tips. On PEI, the University of Prince Edward Island and Holland College both have student job opportunities in the summer as well.
